Jules Jammal (1932-1956), was a young officer in the Syrian Navy receiving military training in Egypt when the Suez Canal War started in late October 1956. He volunteered to fight with the Egyptian Army and destroyed a French liner called Jean d’Arc by crashing his boat, filled with explosives, into it on November 4, 1956. He has since been immortalized in Syria and became a household name in Egypt during the 1950s and early 1960s. Jammal died at the young age of 24.
