The cheque was drawn on Credit Lyonnais - Cairo Branch. Emir Michel Lutfallah was a Syrian-Lebanese aristocrat living in Egypt. He worked as private advisor and banker to Sharif Hussein, and using Hashemite funds, establishing the Syrian-Palestinian Congress, the first political party in exile, after the French Mandate was imposed on Syria in 1920. It had offices in Geneva and Cairo and its members included leading nationalists like Emir Shakib Arslan, Abdul Rahman Shahbandar, and Shukri al-Quawatli.
