Ihsan a-Nuss (1921-2012) studied pre-Islamic Arabic literature and philosophy at
Cairo University, and graduated in 1946.
From 1946 to 1956, Nuss came back to Syria
to teach at high schools, then returning to Cairo for his graduate studies in
1956. In 1963, Nuss began to teach
at Damascus University. In 1966, he became a visiting instructor at the
University of Algeria where, along with a group of Arab academics, Nuss
translated the Algerian curriculum from French into Arabic. He returned to
teach in Syria in 1972. In 1978, Nuss became dean of the Faculty of Arts at
Damascus University, where
he authored 11 textbooks for high school students, on grammar and linguistics,
all of which have become
mandatory in the Syrian curriculum. From 1979 to 1989, he held the position
of visiting professor at Kuwait University. In 1987-1988, he served as director
of the Arabic Language Department at Kuwait University.
In 1979, Nuss joined the Arab Language
Assemblage in Damascus. He conducted research for the institution and became
deputy to its president, Shaker al-Fahham, in 1993. Nuss wrote extensively on
the Umayyad Dynasty and on Islamic history.
